Comparing virtual reality to 3D video

Soumen Ganguly, a management consultant with more than 14 years experience in the telecommunications, media and technology space, thinks there is a lot of potential for virtual reality (VR). Unlike 3D, which at a pointin the 2000s was seen as a game changer in media consumption, virtual reality is more widely applicable, leading to “diverse, high quality content.” In addition, it is an industry supported by a strong community of startups, including Empathetic Media, which are exploring applications for the technology across platforms. Mostly though, Ganguly highlights the “wow factor” of VR and the opportunity for a personal experience. He wrote, referencing the popular augmented reality game Pokémon Go, “As the swarms of real-life people trailing behind their phones in search of augmented reality cartoon creatures have shown, first-person video games put you right in the action.”
